All Nine Starters Contribute For 19-Hit Victory

Nashville SoundsColorado Springs, CO – Baseballs were flying all over Security Service Field on Friday night as Nashville used a 19-hit attack to defeat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 12-8 and get their first win of the season.

All nine starters for the Sounds had at least one hit while six of them produced multi-hit contests. Despite leaving 13 runners on base, Nashville went 8-for-19 with runners in scoring position and improved to 1-1 in 2015.

At the forefront of Friday night’s action was left-hander Barry Zito. The former Cy Young Award winner and World Series champion made his season debut for the Sounds but labored through 4.2 innings.

The southpaw allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits, fanning four and walking one.

Zito appeared as if he would be in line for the victory but never made it out of the fifth. He allowed a three-run home run to Sky Sox outfielder Matt Guez and would take a no-decision on the night.

The Nashville offense did all they could to help, backing their starter with a four-run third. Anthony Aliotti (1-for-4, 2 R, BB, 2B) doubled to open the inning and scored on an Andy Parrino (1-for-5, 2 R, RBI, BB) single. Following a Max Muncy (3-for-4, 2 BB, 2B, 3 R) walk, Bryan Anderson (2-for-5, 2B, R, 3 RBI, BB) plated Parrino with a fly ball that dropped in center. The pair both scored when Joey Wendle (3-for-6, 2 RBI, R, 3B) capped the big inning with a two-run triple. It was the second baseman’s third and fourth RBIs through the young season.

The offense kept the ball rolling in the fourth when they loaded the bases for Jason Pridie (1-for-5, 3 RBI, BB). The outfielder came through with a line drive single to right, allowing Aliotti and Billy Burns (3-for-6, 2 R, SB) to score. Nashville was clinging to a 6-2 lead after the fourth.

Colorado Springs answered with back-to-back three-run frames in the fifth and sixth though, and the lead quickly evaporated.

The Sounds would answer by adding a run in the seventh off an Alden Carrithers (2-for-5, RBI) single and put the exclamation point on the ballgame with a three-run inning of their own in the eighth. Burns, Muncy and Pridie all scored in the frame and helped Nashville acquire their first victory of the year.

Reliever Ryan Cook (W, 2.0 IP, H, K) earned the win after throwing two scoreless innings and Chad Smith (1.0 IP, 2 BB, K) proceeded to hold the Sky Sox at bay in the ninth.

The two teams will commence play again at Security Service Field on Saturday night at 6:35pm CST. Right-hander Angel Castro will make the start for Nashville and will be opposed by lefty Nick Additon.
