APSU Baseball’s Garrett Copeland earns adidas® OVC weekly honor

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsBrentwood, TN – Second baseman Garrett Copeland had three game-winning hits for Austin Peay State University’s baseball team last week and was named the adidas® Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, Monday.

Copeland, of Bartlett,TN began the week with a school-record tying six hits against Middle Tennessee. His 6-for-6, three RBI performance included a game-winning two-run single in the seventh inning and a leadoff home run in the sixth.

The heroics didn’t stop there for the sophomore as Copeland made each of his three hits in the Govs three-game OVC series against Belmont count.

His lone hit in the series opener, Friday night, was a game-winning, fifth-inning two-run home run in Austin Peay’s 7-4 victory.

Copeland was held to one hit again in Game 2 of the series, but it was a two-run double in the eighth inning that helped Austin Peay close to within three runs late in a 12-8 loss. He closed the series with another game-winning hit, this one a leadoff home run in the eighth that set the final score in a 10-9 victory.

For the week, Copeland batted .474 (9-for-18) with three home runs and eight RBI. He finished with a .524 on-base percentage and an impressive 1.053 slugging percentage. Defensively, Copeland did not commit an error in 21 chances.

It is the second time an Austin Peay player has picked up the OVC’s weekly honor. Copeland joins outfielder Patrick Massoni, who was named the league’s Co-Player of the Week, March 10th.

With the 2-1 series victory against Belmont, Austin Peay moved into sole possession of fourth place in the OVC race. The Govs remain just two games behind league-leading Southeast Missouri with four conference weekends remaining.

Austin Peay closes its current six-game homestand with a pair of scheduled midweek contests. The Govs host Memphis in a 6:00pm, Tuesday contest before a 3:00pm, Wednesday contest against Southern Illinois.
