Round Rock, TX – Through 8.2 innings on Saturday night at Dell Diamond, the Nashville Sounds never trailed. Unfortunately, they could not retire that final out and the Round Rock Express walked-off with a 5-4 victory.
The Sounds got out to an early lead. In the top of the first, Ryan Roberts (3-for-4) singled and Kent Matthes (1-for-5) scored courtesy of an interference error on Express third baseman Trever Adams. With the run, the Sounds are now outscoring their opponents 18-4 in the first frame of games.
The thirty-year-old Southpaw was effective against his former team pitching five innings giving up just two runs. He struck out a season-high six batters and left the game in line to secure his first win of 2015.
The Express tied the game off of Pat Venditte (2.0 IP 1 H 1 R 1 ER 2 BB 2 K) in the bottom half of the seventh when Hanser Alberto scored from first on a Ryan Strausborger double. Venditte became the pitcher of record when Alden Carrithers (1-for-3) singled in Andy Parrino (2-for-3) in the eighth to give the Sounds a 4-3 lead.
Fernando Rodriguez struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth, setting up Chad Smith for the opportunity to earn his third save. The Sounds had been 7-0 in games in which the Sounds’ closer had appeared, but the flawless mark came to an abrupt end on this night.
Alberto reached to start the inning on an infield single. Smith retired the next batter, Strausborger, when he failed to keep his sacrifice bunt down and catcher Bryan Anderson caught it. Tomas Telis blooped a single to get the potential run in scoring position.
Next, Smith forced Michael Choice to pop-out to first, setting up a show down with Jared Hoying. The two battled for seven pitches, before Hoying took the 8th offering into the left-center gap, emptying the bases and sending the Sounds to their third loss of the series.
The Sounds looks to avoid the sweep tomorrow with Round Rock. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm. Athletics’ starter Jarrod Parker is expected to make his first AAA rehab start. The Express are expected to counter with # 11 prospect (Baseball America) Luke Jackson.
