Northeast Middle School Students go to Washington D.C.

Northeast Middle SchoolClarksville, TN – Eight students from Northeast Middle School have qualified for the National History Day competition in Washington, D.C., in June.  NEMS had students qualify in every event, which means they each earned either 1st or 2nd place at the state level.

We are very proud of these students and we know that their projects are very strong and should do well at the National level.

These students are:

Miracle Mitchell and Kennede Boyd – 1st Place Group Exhibit and the Award for the Best Project in African American History sponsored by the Planning Committee of the Nashville Conference on African-American History and Culture, Project Title: Corinth Contraband Camp: A Community of Forgotten Leaders for a Legacy of Freedom

Brittani Mays – 1st Place Individual Exhibit, Project Title: Diane Nash: Leadership through Non-Violence and Activism

McKenzie Ward – 2nd Place Individual Website, Project Title: “An Ideal For Which I Am Prepared to Die”: The Life, Leadership, and Legacy of Nelson Mandela

Alanah Smithson – 2nd Place Historical Paper, Project Title: “?Viva la Separacion!”: Victoriano Lorenzo Leads a Nation One Day, and a Culture the Next

Ava Ploeckelman and Donavan Powers – 1st Place Group Documentary, Project Title: “Solidarity Forever”: Pete Seeger’s Leadership and Legacy in American Culture and Folk Music

Whitney Flickinger – 1st Place Individual Performance, Project Title: Earning Representation: Carrie Chapman Catt, Leader of the Suffrage Movement.

“I am incredibly proud and blessed to have been associated with these students,” said Polly Kopp, Technology Engineering Education Coach at NEMS.

“Whitney Joyner, also a coach, Polly Kopp, and the students need our help”, said Tennessee State Representative Joe Pitts said.  “Please join me in supporting their efforts to bring back home to Clarksville the honor of winning the National History Day Competition,” Pitts stated. “You can donate by going to their ‘Go Fund Me’ account and spread the word among your friends, family and co-workers.”
