Nashville Sounds come back to tie only to lose in extra innings to Round Rock Express 8-2

Rehabbing Outfielder Josh Hamilton Goes 0-For-4 In Second Game Back

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Sounds fought back late and tied it up, but Round Rock exploded for six runs in the 10th inning to take the series finale on Monday night at First Tennessee Park, 8-2.

The Sounds split the four-game series with Round Rock and fell to 2-2 in extra innings this season. The six runs in the 10th inning were the most allowed by Nashville pitchers this year.

Pitching did dominate the early part of the finale though. Round Rock grabbed a run in the first and one in the sixth, both off Sounds’ starter Kendall Graveman.

Michael Choice led the game off with a single and Tomas Tellis brought him in with a two-out single. Then in the sixth, Jared Hoying singled, stole second and plated on Ed Lucas’ RBI knock.

Graveman had issues with his command during segments of his outing, walking a total of four. The right-hander threw 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and striking out just one.

Jim Fuller entered out of the bullpen after Graveman’s exit and continued his impressive start at the Triple-A level. The lefty delivered 2.2 scoreless innings with just one hit and three strikeouts. R.J. Alvarez, who was optioned to Nashville on Sunday, breezed through his first inning of work but surrendered all six runs during his second frame, suffering the loss.

Round Rock went ahead in the 10th courtesy of back-to-back two-out hits from Telis and Hoying. Brett Nicholas busted it wide open two batters later with a two-run double. The Express ended up tacking on a six spot in the frame, all runs coming with two away.

Nashville had a few good offensive chances, including having the bases loaded with one away in the second. Alden Carrithers singled and stole a base, while Andy Parrino and Bryan Anderson drew back-to-back walks. The trio never got any farther though, as the next two batters struck out. Then in the sixth, Kent Matthes hit a double into the left field corner for the second consecutive game. The outfielder was advanced to third with just one out, but was stranded to end the frame.

Jason Pridie finally broke the seal and helped the Sounds avoid the shutout when he smoked a double to right in the eighth. His seventh double of the year brought in Craig Gentry and cut the deficit in half. Nate Freiman ended up knotting the score up when he singled through the left side of the infield and Pridie scored. The late comeback attempt did not end up being enough and the Sounds dropped to 12-19.

Nashville hits the road on Tuesday to begin a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park. Left-handers Brad Mills (0-4, 5.19) and Tsuyoshi Wada (0-3, 3.25) will go up against each other for the second time in the past week. Game time is slated for 6:38pm.
