Clarksville’s Customs House Museum June 2015 Exhibits and Activities

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – The Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is located in historic downtown Clarksville, Tennessee. Come explore an entire city block featuring large gallery spaces filled with fine art, science and history.

Some of the events in June at the Museum are: Southern Watercolor Society’s 38th Annual Juried Exhibition, The Illusion of Person and Place: The Spirit of Asia by Bob Sherman, Clarence Cameron White, Flying High 2015 and Story & Craft Time with Ms. Sue.

Southern Watercolor Society’s 38th Annual Juried Exhibition
Through July 5th

This exhibit features eighty-seven paintings from watercolorists across the nation, eleven coming from Tennessee artists.

Clarence Cameron White
June 1st – July 31st

Clarence Cameron White was an African-American music composer and violinist born in Clarksville, TN in 1880. This exhibit in our lobby features various artifacts from his life.

Activities

June First Thursday Art Walk
June 4yj, 5:00pm – 8:00pm

Join us for the First Thursday Art Walk on June 4th. The museum will be open with free admission from 5:00pm – 8:00pm. Author Shana Thornton will be signing copies of her new book Poke Sallet Queen and the Family Medicine Wheel. The book is available for purchase at Seasons: The Museum Store.

Flying High 2015
Saturday, June 6th, 5:00pm at the Wilma Rudolph Event Center

Held the first Saturday of June each year, Flying High is an evening celebrating artists and the works of art of the region. Flying High is Customs House Museum’s preeminent fundraiser of the year, supporting educational and exhibit programming of the Museum. This year’s theme is Arabian Nights!

Tickets to this event are $125.00 for Museum members, and $175.00 for non-members. To purchase ticket(s), please contact Linda Maki at 931.648.5780.

The evening starts at 5:00pm with a silent auction. Dinner is at 7:00pm, followed by the live auction at 8:00 and live music and dancing to conclude the evening.

Artist talk with Bob Sherman & Paul Polycarpou
Saturday June 12th, 6:00pm – 8:00pm

Artist Bob Sherman will discuss his art found in the exhibit The Illusion of Person and Place: The Spirit of Asia by Bob Sherman. Artist Paul Polycarpou of Nashville Arts Magazine will also be speaking. Program is free and open to public.

“Story & Craft Time with Ms. Sue”
June 11th, 18th, 25th, 10:30am – 11:15am

Join us as we learn about illustrators and their styles while listening to wonderful stories.

“Let’s Find”
June 10th, 17th, 24th, 10:30am – 11:30am

This activity explores exhibits through specific topics and includes a story and a craft.

“Family Day – Happy Birthday!”
June 13th, 10:00am  – 5:00pm

The museum is 32 years old this month. Join Ms. Sue in the Children’s Room at your leisure for some hands-on activities and “remember when” stories.

Children’s Room Theme: “Water, Water Everywhere”
Open Daily 10:00am – 5:00pm

During the school year, one member-mom often stopped by the museum with her children after school to spend an hour or so in the Children’s Room and in the Explorers’ Gallery.  Get your membership’s worth: visit the museum often and enjoy these activities that change during the month.

The museum will be closed Saturday and Sunday, June 6th and 7th, for Flying High, as well as Sunday, June 21st for Father’s Day.

Regular museum hours are 10:00am to 5:00pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $7.00, Senior Citizens and College ID $5.00, Ages 6 to 18 $3.00, and under six years and Museum members are free.
