Nashville, TN – The Sounds struck for seven runs in the first four innings on Saturday night and beat Oklahoma City for the second straight night at First Tennessee Park, 7-2.
Jason Pridie got the home team off on the right foot in the first. He struck a ball that went for a bloop single in front of the Dodgers’ centerfielder Chris Heisey. It was Pridie’s 82nd hit this season, second most in the Pacific Coast League, and it plated Joey Wendle and Ryan Roberts for a 2-0 advantage.
After reaching on catcher’s interference, he swiped his ninth bag this season and proceeded to third base when the ball scooted away from the catcher following a Wendle strikeout.
Roberts brought Gentry in with a single on a 0-2 pitch, and Nashville held a 3-0 advantage.
The three-run cushion was ample support for Sounds’ starter Sean Nolin.
Nolin had allowed a season-high six runs in his last outing on Sunday against Omaha, but got back on track in Saturday’s contest. The lefty established season highs with 5 2/3 innings and 102 pitches, helping bump his record to 2-1 on the year with the win. The only blemish of the night was a solo shot off Darwin Barney’s bat to lead off the fifth. The Dodgers had a base runner in every inning against Nolin, producing eight hits off the pitcher, but failed to take advantage.
Nashville put the game out of reach with a four-run fourth. Pridie led off with a walk and was driven in two batters later by Niuman Romero. The big frame was highlighted when Andy Parrino slammed a three-run shot that landed two rows back in left field. It was the infielder’s sixth homer of the season.
Seven of the nine starters in Nashville’s lineup posted a hit and the club was 7-for-15 with runners in scoring position. Wendle, Roberts, Pridie and Jake Smolinski all recorded multi-hit affairs and combined for nine of the Sounds’ 12 hits. Nashville also swiped three bases as a team, setting a new season high.
The bullpen held Nashville’s lead when Nolin took his exit. After Ryan Verdugo went 1 1/3 scoreless, Brock Huntzinger allowed a run over two innings. The tally was the first Huntzinger had allowed since May 14th. The scoreless streak, which was the longest by a Nashville reliever this season, covered 18 innings and a total of 12 games
The two teams will battle in the third game of the series on Sunday night at First Tennessee Park. Barry Zito (5-6, 3.94) will make his league-leading 16th start, while the Dodgers will give the ball to Scott Baker. Game time is scheduled for 6:35pm.
