Nashville Sounds split Games with Albuquerque Isotopes at First Tennessee Park

Nashville Sounds’ Cody Martin, Brad Mills Post Season-High Strikeout Totals

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds fell 6-0 to the Albuquerque Isotopes in game one of Thursday night’s doubleheader, but got revenge in the nightcap winning 3-1 at First Tennessee Park.

Roger Bernardina and Tom Murphy hit back-to-back doubles down the left field line to give the Isotopes a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game one, before Sounds starter Cody Martin got Angelys Nina to groundout for the second out of the second inning.

Albuquerque then strung together four straight hits, registering four two-out RBIs and extending their lead to 5-0, the big blow coming on a two-run triple by Trevor Story.

Martin surrendered six runs and took his fourth loss of the season, despite recording a season-high nine strikeouts over six innings.

Three major leaguer pitchers made rehab appearances in the game – including Isotopes starter Chad Bettis. The right-hander threw five scoreless innings, striking out seven. For Nashville, Oakland Athletics closer Sean Doolittle struck out the side for the second consecutive game.

Like the first game, Albuquerque opening the scoring in the nightcap, tagging Brad Mills for a run in the first via a Willin Rosario RBI single. The southpaw got out of the jam by getting Bernardina to ground into a double play. Mills has now induced 20 double plays, tops on the team. Including the twin-killing the southpaw retired 16 straight batters to finish his outing, recording a season-high seven strikeouts.

After being shutout in the first game, the Sounds were kept off the board until the sixth in the nightcap. Joey Wendle led off the frame with a single and found himself at third with no outs after Ryan Roberts walked and Jason Pridie singled. Next batter Rangel Ravelo finally broke the ice, drawing a bases loaded walk to tie the game.

Max Muncy then hit a blooper that fell in short left, but Roberts had to wait to see if it was caught, and was forced out at home. Fortunately for Nashville, Nate Freiman singled to give the home team their first lead of the series. They would extend their lead to 3-1 on a sacrifice fly by Brent Morel.

Angel Castro allowed the first two batters to reach, before striking out Bernardina and Ryan Casteel. Tim Smalling then drove in a runner to make it 3-2, but Castro shut the door on Jeremy Barfield to close it out. The right-hander now has five saves.

The two teams will be back at it on Friday night at First Tennessee Park. Nathan Long (3-4, 5.73) against Boone Whiting (3-7, 5.95) is the expected pitching matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
