Chattanooga, TN – Freshman Jennifer Smith headed home the game-winning goal in double overtime, Sunday, as Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team defeated Chattanooga, 1-0.
For the second time in three days, the Lady Govs (1-1-0) were faced with a golden goal scenario in double overtime. But this time, fortune favored Austin Peay on the road at Finlay Stadium. Fellow freshman Sydney Dawson made a run down the right side of the pitch, and sent in a high cross to Smith in the box, who connected with a low header to beat the keeper.
It’s the sixth-straight victory over Chattanooga (0-1-0), improving the all-time record to 7-3-0 in favor of APSU.
“I thought Sydney Dawson did a great job all day getting forward,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “It started with a set play, with midfielders playing quick and short to get it wide. Sydney served in an early ball, and Jen was there to finish it. It was a beautiful goal and great way to finish the game.”
Beginning in the first half, Austin Peay was relentless in making runs forward down each of the flanks. Controlling possession in the midfield set up scoring chances for senior Shelby Olszewski to make plays in the box, but was caught offside twice early on.
In the second half, Olszewski had another scoring opportunity, this time on a diving header which sailed wide. Olszewski, along with Smith, Kirstin Robertson and McKenzie Dixon, each had two shots in the contest.
The Lady Govs attempted five shots in each of the two regulation periods, outshooting the Mocs 11-3 in the match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lindsey Todd was tested early on a dangerous chance after pressing off the line, but Isabel Holmes was there to clear it away. Todd was credited with no saves, but more importantly, earned the win after playing the full duration.
With two challenging, fast-paced games in the books, the Lady Govs are reaping the benefits of competing in overtime. As many freshmen contribute on the pitch, the experience now adds to the growth of the squad.
“I think it’s a great challenge for them and for us to get some needed experience in the non-conference season,” Guth said. “Hopefully, it will help us develop some mental and physical toughness. I’m extremely excited these girls are getting the experience that they are, and we’ve got a great group of upperclassmen who are contributing, helping them grow and come together as a team.”
Austin Peay will have a week off to rejuvenate before traveling to Ole Miss, Sunday, August 30th. Kickoff from Ole Miss Soccer Stadium will take place at 3:00pm.
