APSU Lady Govs Tennis starts season at UT Martin’s Skyhawk Invitational

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team opens its fall season this weekend at the Skyhawk Invitational, hosted by UT Martin.

The Lady Govs will get their first look at two Ohio Valley Conference teams who will be competing in the four-team field.

Along with the Skyhawks, Southeast Missouri will meet APSU in its first set of matches, 4:00pm, Friday. Alabama-Huntsville also joins the list of participants.

After a 3-17 record last season, Austin Peay looks to rebuild in 2015-16 after the departure of three seniors. A sibling combination of freshmen Claudia and Lidia Yanes Garcia and are projected to anchor the singles lineup in the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively.

Sophomore Brittney Covington will follow at No. 3, while junior Isabela Jovanovic holds the No. 4 spot.

In doubles play, Claudia and Covington will team up at No. 1, leaving Lidia and Jovanovic for the No. 2 pairing.

UT Martin reached the OVC Tournament in 2014-15, only to bow out in the opening round against third-seeded Morehead State. The Skyhawks are led by junior Sarah Candeloro, who earned All-OVC second-team honors a season ago.

Southeast Missouri will look to improve upon last season’s 2-8 OVC record beginning with its fall season. In the spring, the Redhawks defeated Austin Peay, 4-3, after winning four of six singles matches.

Alabama-Huntsville reached the Gulf South Conference quarterfinals before suffering a 5-1 defeat against North Alabama. The Chargers are headed by No. 1 Marleen Gort and No. 2 Cristina Cabanas, who earned All-GSC recognition last season.
