APSU Lady Govs Volleyball loses to North Dakota, Aubrey Marsellis has 20 kills

Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Senior Aubrey Marsellis finished with a career-high 20 kills but Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team dropped a four-set decision (21-25, 25-21, 20-25, 21-25) to North Dakota, Wednesday night at the Dunn Center.

Austin Peay (4-8) struggled with consistency, particularly on offense throughout the match.

The Lady Govs opened the match with eight errors in the first set and posted a .143 attack percentage. Despite the offensive woes, Austin Peay led 20-19 before North Dakota scored five straight points to break the set open en route to a 25-21 victory.

The Lady Govs found their offensive voice in the second set, powering to 15 kills against just four errors (.324 attack percentage). Austin Peay had three consecutive kills as part of a 6-2 opening run and never looked back in the 25-21 match-leveling victory.

Austin Peay fell back into its first set woes after the break, again committing eight attack errors in the third set and posting a .195 attack percentage. The Lady Govs led at 13-12 but back-to-back attack errors wiped out the advantage. Another Austin Peay attack error gave North Dakota the lead for good at 18-17 as they went on to win, 25-20.

North Dakota (8-4) won the match in a wire-to-wire run through the fourth set. UND posted a match-bests in kills (16) and attack percentage (.371) in the set. Austin Peay tried to keep pace with Marsellis providing seven of its 14 kills in the frame, but could only post a .250 attack percentage in the finale.

Marsellis’ 20-kill outing is the best by a Lady Govs hitter this season. She finished with only five errors for a .469 attack percentage, just shy of her career best. Marsellis also had four blocks and three assists.

  • Marsellis’ 20 kills dominated the scoresheet, as Austin Peay finished with 59 kills as a team. Ashley Slay‘s nine kills were second-best on the squad.
  • Austin Peay won the blocking battle by an 8-7 count, Slay and Marsellis finishing with four blocks each (two solo and two assists).
  • North Dakota featured a more balanced attack with four players recording 10 or more kills. Juli Kaczorowaska and Faith Dooley each had 15 kills to pace a 55-kill offensive effort.

Austin Peay begins a seven-match road trip, Friday, at the Memphis Intercollegiate. Austin Peay begins the tournament with a 7:00pm contest against host Memphis before facing Mississippi State and Southern Miss in Saturday action.
