September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Clarksville

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan has proclaimed September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

According to national statistics, 22,000 women are diagnosed each year with ovarian cancer and 14,000 of them die from the disease. There is no current reliable testing for early diagnosis and many women are not diagnosed until the late states of the disease.

Making diagnosis even more difficult is the fact that the symptoms are often subtle and easy to ignore.

“I am happy to encourage all women to make sure they talk with their doctors about the symptoms of ovarian cancer,” said Mayor Kim McMillan. “We are very fortunate in Clarksville to have a network of ovarian cancer survivors and advocates who are working to educate women in our community about this disease.”

Kelli Faerber is one of those advocates. In April of 2013, Kelli’s beloved grandmother’s battle with ovarian cancer ended. Kelli has made it her mission to educate as many women, healthcare professionals and family members about the disease. Her grandmother would have been 76 years old this month.

“One in 72 women will develop ovarian cancer,” Kelli says. “Only 15% of them will be diagnosed early enough for treatment to be successful. This needs to change.”
