Richmond, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team could not maintain its offensive rhythm, Sunday, losing 1-0 in the first Ohio Valley Conference match of the season at Eastern Kentucky.
“I am disappointed in our overall performance, because we were not sharp and did not play our game,” Austin Peay head coach Kelley Guth said. “We had a few good opportunities to finish and if we do that, it may have resulted in a different outcome. We cannot afford to miss our chances in OVC play.”
APSU attempted eight shots in the first half, led by forwards Gina Fabbro and Shelby Olszewski. The Lady Govs actually took three of the game’s first four shots, two coming from Olszewski. At the 15-minute mark, Austin Peay tested EKU keeper Anna Hall with three shots in a five minute span following a corner kick.
But in the 57th minute, the Colonels broke the tie. Haley Kemper scored an unassisted goal, bouncing a shot from 20 yards out off the post and into the net.
The Lady Govs continued to create chances in the final 30 minutes, but Hall made seven saves en route to a shutout. Fabbro led the team in shots with four, while Olszewski and sophomore Kirsten Robertson recorded three apiece.
Sophomore Lindsey Todd made four saves for Austin Peay in the loss.
The Lady Govs return home, 7:00pm, Friday, to take on Southeast Missouri at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.
