Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – For the first time since 2002 Austin Peay State University women’s golf team is the F&M APSU Intercollegiate champion.

Riding Jessica Cathey‘s 1-under 71—one of four Lady Govs counting scores below 80—Austin Peay overcome an eight-shot deficit with a final-round 306 to capture the 2015 championship.

The Lady Govs’ 619 was six shots better than Lipscomb, which finished at 625 (305-320). Tennessee Tech was third at 626, with Belmont fourth at 631.

“They took advantage of playing in that last group (with Lipscomb and Tennessee Tech) and really played well today,” APSU coach Sara Robson said. “We were really close to breaking some records today–It’s going to happen!

“But I am proud of the way they played today, the way they finished. We had a lot of birdies today.”

The Lady Govs were able to win their tournament for the third time as senior Jessica Cathey played perhaps her finest tournament. Coming off perhaps her worst tournament as Lady Govs a month ago at Murray State, Cathey backed up a strong first-round 74 with a superb 1-under round.

The 71 matched her career best. The Hixson Tennessee native entered the final three holes 1-over par but birdied Nos. 16 and 17 while narrowly missing birdie on 18.

“I am super proud of the way Jessica played,” Robson said. “She really went out there today with the mindset she was not going to settle for anything but first. And that’s what it takes.”

APSU's Morgan KauffmanIn capturing her first medalist honor by six shots, Cathey was the leader in both par-3 and par-4 scoring. She also had seven more pars (30 total) than any other golfer.

In addition to Cathey’s outstanding performance, junior Morgan Kauffman and freshman Ashton Goodley came in with 78s while junior Morgan Gardner scrambled her way to a 79, saving pars with some impressive sand work. Only sophomore AnnaMichelle Moore (174) struggled during the two rounds.

Almost lost in Cathey’s performance was the play of freshman Taylor Goodley, who, as an individual, shot 75-77 for 152, finishing third. Junior Kelsey Schutt had a 14th-place finish with a 158 (78-80) while Sarah Beth Struble (84-76) and Amber Bosworth (85-77) were t-17th and t-22nd, respectively.

This was APSU’s first team title since the 2002 F&M but Sara Robson believes more is to come in the future.

“This was the boost we need,” she said. “With the confidence we gained this week it should really help in the future.

“Being in the that uncomfortable position, being in that last group, knowing where you are and how you have to play because of not only the people you are playing with but also the teams that are playing behind you, that’s pressure. Handle that the way they did, shows the improvement they have made and a lot of confidence on their part.”
