West Lafayette, IN – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team members Lidia Yanes Garcia and Claudia Yanes Garcia combined to win five matches over the weekend at the ITA Ohio Valley Regional, hosted by Purdue.
During the qualifying rounds for doubles, the twins faced Andela Brguljan and Marina Moreno from Evansville, coming through with a win after a tie break of 8-7 (5). However, in the second round, the Lady Govs fell to Anzhelika Shapovalova and Anastasiia Vasiukhina, the duo from Miami (OH), 8-4.In the qualifying round for singles, Claudia rolled through Andjela Djokovic from Purdue, 6-4, 6-2 and Alexandra Brinker from Xavier 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. These two victories advanced her straight into the main draw round where she was defeated by Aldila Sutjadi of Kentucky, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Lidia, starting directly in the main draw for singles, came out victorious against Kirsten Lewis from Kentucky, 6-4, 6-3. However, she was later defeated by Ann-Kathrin Wind from Memphis, 6-3, 6-2.
In the consolation round of the tournament, Claudia went on to play Marina Marti from Eastern Kentucky, winning 6-2, inj.
The tournament concludes the fall season for the Lady Govs. Austin Peay now serves a three-month break before opening the regular season at home vs. Kennesaw State, January 24th.
