APSU fraternity makes pledge toward endowed scholarship

Austin Peay State University - APSU - logoClarksville, TN – The national Alpha Kappa Psi (AKPsi) business fraternity turned 111-years-old earlier this month, and to commemorate the birthday, members of Austin Peay State University’s award-winning Zeta Phi Chapter decided to fund an endowed scholarship in honor of the organization’s longevity.

On October 5th, the fraternity’s Founder’s Day, chapter officers presented Dr. Alisa White, APSU president, with a lead gift of $2,500. The scholarship will be fully endowed at $25,000.

“This endeavor has been something that has been discussed for a couple of years by the members of the fraternity, but the officers met this summer and decided to make this a reality,” Matthew Kilpatrick, the organization’s chapter advisor, said. “In addition to budgeting a specific amount of their revenue to go into the fund per year, the chapter has reached out to alumni to help promote and raise funds for the endowment account.”

The AKPsi fraternity was founded on October 5th, 1904, at New York University, and the Zeta Phi Chapter was founded at APSU in 1965. In the years since it arrived on campus, the organization has produced more than 900 chapter alumni at Austin Peay.

“Rebecca Jacks, the chapter president, and Curtice Barrow, the treasurer, have been the driving force behind this initiative to give back to APSU, but the entire membership of the chapter has rallied together to support this cause,” Kilpatrick said.

The fraternity is looking to create two scholarships that will be awarded annually to full-time students. One scholarship will be for a freshman with a minimum 3.5 high school GPA, and the other will be for a current AKPsi member in good standing with the fraternity and with a minimum 3.25 GPA.
