Austin Peay State University Lady Govs - APSUClarksville, TN – Given her family’s history, it is little surprise that Towanda, Illinois native Ginny Gerig has decided to continue her volleyball career, signing a letter of intent with Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team, Wednesday.

Gerig (pronounced GAIR-ig), a 5-5 libero, comes from a volleyball-centered family with four sisters who played or are playing collegiate volleyball.

Nicki, who played at Auburn (2007) and Florida Atlantic (2008-10); Vanessa, who played at North Alabama (2010-11); Jackie, who played at LSU (2012) and Arkansas State (2013); and Jessie, who is currently a sophomore setter at Youngstown State.

The latest of the Gerig sisters to pursue collegiate volleyball, Ginny is completing her career at Normal Community High School with head coach Christine Konopasek. The Ironmen have compiled a 30-8 record this season and have reached the Illinois High School Association Class 4A Final Four with semifinal round action scheduled Friday. Gerig has amassed 431 digs (4.68 per set) and 44 service aces (0.48 per set) this season.

It is the second straight season Gerig has helped Normal Community reach the Class 4A final four. She was a member of last season’s team that posted a 36-5 record and finished third in the state championship. Gerig finished that season with 387 digs (4.40 per set) and 35 service aces (0.40 per set). She was named to the Pantagraph All-Area second team.

“Ginny is a relentless and versatile athlete who can set and play libero at a very high level,” said Lady Govs head coach Taylor Mott. “She knows the game of volleyball so well and plays with such passion it is contagious. She comes from a long line of older sisters who all played college volleyball. We are so excited to be adding Ginny to our roster, we feel she can make an immediate impact on our program.”

A member of the Illini Elite Volleyball Club, Gerig played this past summer on the 17 Cardinal team headed by Michelle Erins. That squad was seeded No. 18 entering the tournament and finished second in the AAU Junior National Championship’s Open Division.
