Clarksville, TN – After spending nearly three weeks on the road, Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team will play host to Wofford, 7:00pm, Tuesday, in Dave Aaron Arena in both teams’ last contest before Christmas.
Tuesday’s contest will be the first of a six-game Governors homestand.
“It was certainly a game we can build off,” APSU coach Dave Loos said. “We did a lot of good things, especially in the second half, and it all started on the defensive end.
“I tell these guys constantly that you get your offense from your defense. You start getting some stops, you get a little transition going, you make a few shots, you gain a little confidence and it leads to more shots and more confidence.”
Senior center Chris Horton, who was named Ohio Valley Conference and Mid-Major Madness Player of the Week, scored a career-high 37 points on 16-of-17 shooting. He also grabbed 13 rebounds for his 10th double-double this season.
Josh Robinson, who was held to three first-half points because of foul troubles, finished with 21 points, to help lead a rally from 10 points down. Forward Khalil Davis finished with 14 points and a career-high nine assists.
This contest will be the first between the Governors and Wofford, a member of the Southern Conference. The Terriers, meanwhile, come in a misleading 3-7 on the year.
Of their seven losses, five have coming to high-majors, including to then-No. 1 North Carolina and just last Saturday to No. 23 Vanderbilt. Wofford is two-time defending Southern Conference tournament champions. In fact, the Terriers have made NCAA tourney appearances in four of the last six seasons. This season they were picked second in preseason behind favorite Chattanooga.
“Wofford is an outstanding basketball team,” APSU basketball coach Dave Loos said. “They have enjoyed a lot of success these past few seasons under Mike Young and are a well-coached team.”
Do-everything guard Spencer Collins, a third-team All-SoCon selection a year ago, was named all-league preseason this year. He leads the Terriers in scoring at 13.5 points per game while also averaging 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists. Forward Justin Gordon is averaging 11.6 points while freshman guard Fletcher Magee averages 10.1 points outing. Senior forward C.J. Neumann is Wofford’s leading rebounder at 5.4 snares a contest.
Wofford is amidst its first three-game losing streak since December 2013.
