Austin Peay Sports Information
Brentwood, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball senior guard Tiasha Gray picked up her first Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week award this season, the league office announced Tuesday.
Gray, of Clarksville, led Austin Peay to victories against Jacksonville State and Tennessee Tech last week.
It was a rough start for the preseason All-OVC pick as she battled foul trouble in Austin Peay’s contest against Jacksonville State, Thursday. She was held to 16 points with 12 of those coming in the second half.
However, she sealed the 61-59 victory with a blocked shot on the Gamecocks final field goal attempt. Gray also dished out five assists and made all four of her free-throw attempts in the contest.
Foul trouble could have again haunted Gray two days later against Tennessee Tech. She picked up her second foul with three minutes remaining in the first quarter. But her return to the floor early in the second quarter sparked APSU’s 15-0 run to climb back into the contest. Gray finished with 32 points – her ninth career 30-point outing – seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in APSU’s impressive 91-75 victory.
It is Gray’s fourth career OVC Player of the Week honor and the fifth time she has been recognized with one of the league’s weekly awards. She also was named the league’s Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Eastern Kentucky forward Jalen O’Bannon was the league’s Newcomer of the Week and UT Martin guard Daijia Ruffin was its Freshman of the Week.
Austin Peay begins a three-game OVC road trip when it meets Tennessee State in a 5:30pm, Thursday contest at the Gentry Center.
