Chris Horton named Austin Peay Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State University Sports - APSU - Governors - Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Senior center Chris Horton, of the Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

Horton earned Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week honors after leading the Govs to their first win against Murray State since 2011. He averaged 22.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 3.0 assists in two games last week.

Horton had 15 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high six assists in a loss at UT Martin to open the week, but it was his performance at Murray State on Saturday that stood out.

He scored 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting and added 10 rebounds and a season-high tying four steals, including one in the final seconds that led to Josh Robinson’s go-ahead free-throws.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Wednesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included

  • Freshman Claudia Yanes Garcia, of the women’s tennis team, pulled off an unbeaten weekend for the Govs from her slot at No. 2 singles—the newcomer from Los Realejos, Spain defeated Dayton’s Alex Townsend (6-3, 6-1) and picked up APSU’s lone singles win against Chattanooga’s Kelsey Coots (6-1, 6-1), Saturday.
  • Senior sprinter Breigh Jones, of the track and field team, won the 400m dash at the MT Invitational with a 56.82 run and was runner-up in the 200m at 25.39.
  • Senior guard Tiasha Gray, of the women’s basketball team, led the Govs in scoring at UT Martin (20 points) and Murray State (18, all in the second half) last week, also averaging 7.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals.
