Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUHilton Head Island, SC – It was a mixed bag for Austin Peay State University men’s golf team during the first day of the 11th Annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Monday, at the Wexford Plantation Course.

Governors’ senior Chris Baker was the only tourney player to record a pair of eagles during the two-round day while also owning the day’s lowest average score (4.13) on the par 5s while the Govs, as a team, had the third lowest par-5 score (4.90).

However, the Govs also had the second worst scores on the par 3s and par 4s and second fewest birdies (19) during their spring season’s first day.

As a result, the Govs enter the final 18 holes in 15th place on the par-72, 6,913-yard layout. They shots rounds of 306-301 (607), Monday. Campbell leads after the first 54 holes at 568 (286-282).

Baker ended the first day tied for 21st after shooting 74-72 (146). In addition to his two eagles (No. 11 first round, No. 8 second round), Baker also had six birdies. However, he also incurred a trio of double bogeys that prevented him from a possible special first tourney day. He was seven shots better than any of his teammates. In fact, both his rounds were the Govs’ best of the day.

Sophomore Justin Arens shot a 153 (77-76) followed by Austin Kramer at 154 (77-77), Erik Hedberg at 155 (78-77) and Tyler Phillips at 157 (81-76). Phillips was on his way to a solid first round, with a 1-over after 15 holes before disaster struck with back-to-back snowmen on Nos. 15 and 16 (his starting hole was No. 18). Phillips exacted some revenge in the second round with a birdie on No. 16.

In fact, in the opening round, after Baker knocked home a long putt for an eagle on the par-5 eighth hole, the Govs were just 2-over for the day at a little more than the halfway point (APSU golfers started on 16, 17 or 18 in shotgun start) and worked their way into Top 5 contention, but green, blue and even black numbers halted any momentum on the closing holes as APSU dropped down the leaderboard to finish 18-over par in that round. Some late second-round struggles also hampered the Govs as the long day ended.
