In Billy’s artist statement he states, “The simple fact of the matter is that I love paper, especially paper that has been around the block. There is no substitute for endurance.”

He goes on to say of his work, “I guess that’s why I’m drawn to collage – I don’t want to make art that looks like the world, I want to make it out of the world.”

Billy Renkl (b. 1963) grew up in Birmingham, AL. He attended Auburn University and the University of South Carolina, where he received an MFA in Drawing. He currently teaches drawing and illustration at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. Billy’s collage work often features fragments of old texts and diagrams, exploring the relationship that fine art has to information graphics, as well as the nostalgia inherent in paper ephemera.

Billy’s work has been featured in many solo and group exhibitions, including solo shows at The Cumberland Gallery in Nashville, Taylor Bercier Fine Arts in New Orleans, The University of Alabama, The Jule Collins Smith Museum at Auburn University, The University of Kentucky, The Tennessee Arts Commission, and the Galerie Neue Raume, Berlin, Germany. He is represented in permanent collections, including The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Kiwanis Club International, The Tennessee State Museum, and The College of Notre Dame, Baltimore.

The DAC exhibit is always a central part of Clarksville’s First Thursday Art Walk; a wonderful evening of visual arts, music food and much more in beautiful Historic Downtown Clarksville. 1st Thursday Art Walk occurs every month on the every 1st Thursday.
