Adventure Science Center to explore Nanotechnology, Light this Saturday

Scientists from Austin Peay, Belmont, Fisk and Vanderbilt universities to exhibit

Adventure Science CenterNashville, TN – Adventure Science Center will offer visitors a chance to explore the smallest science this Saturday, March 19th, from 10:00am to 3:00pm. NanoDays and the Day of Light celebration will showcase cutting-edge discoveries in the field.

Discover the benefits and challenges of nanoscale science and engineering during NanoDays, which is part of a nationwide festival of educational programs centered on all things “nano.” Scientists and researchers, including those from the Vanderbilt/Fisk Materials Research Society, Belmont Chapter of NSTA, Austin Peay Chi Epsilon Mu (XEM) Chemistry Club and Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science (VSVS) will be on hand to help visitors explore the minuscule world of atoms, molecules, nanoscale forces and nanotechnology and to bring this smallest science to life.

  • Exploring Products: Kinetic Sand and Nano Fabric
  • Exploring Materials: Polarizers and Thin Films
  • Exploring Properties: Heat Transfer

Day of Light
Also during NanoDays, Vanderbilt University’s Biophotonics Center and Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) Student Chapter will be present during the Day of Light celebration to share the world of light and optics with visitors and raise awareness about how light-based technologies promote sustainable development and provide solutions to worldwide challenges in energy, education, agriculture, communications and health. SPIE will help you explore the following questions:

  • Will an object absorb, reflect or transmit light?
  • How do changes in energy lead to fluorescence?
  • What are the different ways light waves move?
  • How do fiber optics work?
  • Why does light scatter in different ways?
