Morehead, KY – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team displayed improvements in doubles action, but could not maintain its lead in a 4-2 loss at Morehead State, Saturday.
The Governors (0-7) won the doubles point to gain early momentum, but could not sustain it after going 1-4 against the Eagles (3-6) in singles.
Newcomer Almantas Ozelis and sophomore Aleh Drobysh set the tone to begin the day, grabbing a 6-3 win over Ognjen Sunjevaric and Sabastian Penaloza at No. 2.A loss by Aaron Jumonville and Manuel Montenegro against Ritchie Kruunenberg and Gabriel Ruiz, 6-3, leveled the score, but freshmen Alex Kartsonis and Chad Woodham clinched the point with a win over Nick Mercer and Enrique Samudio, 6-4.
Austin Peay’s sole win in singles came at the No. 3 slot, with Montenegro knocking off Samudio, 6-4, 6-4.
At the top of the order, Kruunenberg defeated Jumonville, 7-6(2), 6-4, while Ruiz beat Ozelis, 6-1, 7-6(5). At No. 4, Mercer cruised over Drobysh, 6-1, 6-0, followed by Penaloza outdueling Kartsonis, 6-3, 7-5. Woodham vs. Sunjevaric was unfinished after Morehead held a 6-3, 4-2 advantage.
Austin Peay returns to the Governors Tennis Center next weekend to face SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Illinois Friday-Saturday.
