Nashville, TN – Austin Peay State University (APSU) track and field team opened its 2016 outdoor campaign at this weekend’s Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational, shaking off a month’s worth of rust after the end of indoor season.
Ross (personal-best 56.16) finished sixth in the 400m dash, while junior Terri Morris‘ 55.77 mark earned her fourth-place honors in the event; it’s the first time she broke the 56-second mark in outdoor 400m competition since the 2014 OVC Championships.
Junior Myiah Johnson is already ahead of schedule; her 14.29 mark earned her a seventh-place finish in the 100m hurdles, an event in which she did not post a sub-14.30 mark in 2015 until mid-April.
Junior Chancis Jones returned with a big day. After injury shut her down during indoor season, she opened her outdoor campaign with a sixth-place, 5.70m (18-8.5) long jump mark.
Austin Peay’s freshman pole vault duo of Savannah Amato and Dascha Hix saw their outdoor careers get off to strong starts. Amato’s 3.70m (12-1.5) mark earned her sixth place, while Hix settled for ninth with a 3.55m (11-7.75); she was equal with the seventh-place finishers in height but had more attempts, bumping her down the lists.
Ross was busy for the Govs this weekend, but sophomore Sonja White also was proving her mettle all over the place. Her 200m dash mark (24.94) Friday evening was four-hundredths of a second off her personal-best, and she also stepped up big for the Govs in both the 100m (14.41, 11th) and 400m (personal-best 1:05.55, 12th) hurdles.
The Govs return to action next week at the Florida Relays in Gainesville, FL.
