Tennessee State Representative - District 67Nashville, TN – On February 3rd, 2016, I requested the State Attorney General Herbert Slatery to review and issue a legal opinion on the property tax relief legislation (Public Chapter 481) passed last year.

On Tuesday, March 29th, we received the following opinion from the Attorney General attached at the bottom of this article.

House Bill 1410/Senate Bill 1484 (Senator Mark Green (R-Clarksville) passed both the Senate Local Government Committee and the House Local Sub-Government Committee on March 30th.

This legislation as drafted will repeal the “Save our Property Tax Relief” legislation, Public Chapter 481, which passed last year.  Public Chapter 481 made changes to the disabled veterans, senior citizens and disabled citizen property tax relief program.

“I am honored to carry this legislation on behalf of veterans, low income seniors, and our disabled citizens” stated Rep. Pitts. “I want to publicly thank the bi-partisan members of this committee especially Chairman of the Local Sub Committee Dale Carr (R-Sevierville), Chairman of the Local Full Committee Tim Wirgau (R-Buchanan) who were instrumental in the bill’s advancement.”

” I also want to thank the members of the other pieces of legislation that agreed to withdraw their bills and back mine.  They were John Forgerty (R-Athens), John Ragan (R-Oak Ridge), John Mark Windle (D-Livingston) and Kevin Brooks (R-Cleveland).   Clarksville and Montgomery County were well represented in the committee.  Sherry Pickering, Bill Summers, Vivian Fivecoat, and Warren Evans testified before the committee to discuss the impact of the cuts made in last year’s legislation.  Montgomery County Trustee Brenda Radford also gave testimony at the hearing,” said Rep. Pitts.
