Four Dodgers Limit Nashville to Four Hits
Nashville, TN – The Oklahoma City Dodgers spoiled Opening Day in Nashville with a 5-0 shutout win over the Sounds on Thursday night at First Tennessee Park.
Rain, and early Oklahoma City scoring, put a damper on the evening. The game was delayed 45 minutes to start when heavy rain began to fall just minutes before the scheduled first pitch of 6:35pm.
When play began, the Dodgers (1-0) didn’t waste any time getting in front. Micah Johnson started the game with a bloop single to left and moved to second on a stolen base.
Two batters later, Dodgers third baseman Rob Segedin launched a two-run home run to left field to give Oklahoma City an early 2-0 lead.In the top of the fourth, Sounds (0-1) starter Chris Smith issued three walks and another base hit to lead to another pair of runs. In five innings of work, Smith allowed four runs on four hits to go along with three walks and six strikeouts.
Nashville wasn’t able to muster any offense against Oklahoma City pitching. Starter Zach Lee fired six shutout innings on just 63 pitches. He turned it over to Lisalverto Bonilla who worked a scoreless seventh. Relievers Adam Liberatore and Chin-hui Tsao followed suit with scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
Three of Nashville’s four hits were followed by double plays. Chad Pinder led off the fifth with a base hit to left before Rangel Ravelo grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
Renato Nunez opened the sixth with a line drive off Lee’s foot that went for a single, but was quickly erased when Bruce Maxwell hit into a 4-6-3 twin killing.
With one away in the bottom of the ninth, Joey Wendle singled to left field but Jake Smolinski bounced into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.
Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday night. Right-hander Jesse Hahn starts for the Sounds against right-hander Jharel Cotton for the Dodgers. First pitch is set for 6:35pm.
