APSU Tennis Govs take out Tennessee State 6-1

Austin Peay State University Governors - APSUClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team extended its Ohio Valley Conference winning streak, Friday, knocking off Tennessee State 6-1 at the Governors Tennis Center.

The Governors (5-8, 4-2 OVC) have now won four consecutive matches in league play, all occurring on their home court.

The doubles point have proven to be crucial over the team’s run, and APSU nearly dropped the point to the Tigers (8-12, 1-6 OVC) if not for a valiant tiebreaker effort.

No. 1s Aaron Jumonville and Manuel Montenegro gave Austin Peay the first win of the day, defeating Daniel Bernal and Amir Daniel, 6-4. Two courts over, TSU rebounded as Jorge Rodriguez and Shashank Nautiyal topped Chad Woodham and Alex Kartsonis, 6-4.

The No. 2 doubles match went down to the wire, with the Govs overcoming a deficit to force a tiebreaker. In the end, Almantas Ozelis and Aleh Drobysh rallied to beat Grant Maddox and Kyle Burton, 7-6(4) for the point.

Austin Peay’s lone singles loss came at the No. 1 spot, where Bernal upset Jumonville, 7-6(5), 6-2. However, his teammates stepped up to claim the remaining five points en route to a big victory.

Ozelis battled for a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over Nautiyal, while Montenegro cruised over Rodriguez, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 3, Drobysh needed three sets to defeat Burton, including a last set tiebreaker, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(5). Rounding out the lineup, Kartsonis breezed over Maddox, 6-0, 6-1, and Woodham dropped Daniel, 6-1, 6-2.

Austin Peay wraps up the home portion of its schedule 2:00pm, Saturday, in Clarksville, TN. Ten minutes before first serve, the Govs coaching staff will hold a recognition for the squad’s only senior, Evan Borowski.
