Bi-County Solid Waste Management Stops Outside Refuse Collection May 1st, 2016

Montgomery County TennesseeMontgomery County, TN – The decision was made in 2012 for Bi-County Solid Waste Management (SWM) to accept and haul refuse from neighboring counties. As of May 1st, 2016, Bi-County SWM will not accept or haul any refuse from outside Stewart and Montgomery Counties until further notice.

Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett states, “We have recently become aware that our landfill expansion permit has not yet been issued. Without the ability to expand our current landfill capacity, we cannot accommodate the neighboring counties and still leave room for the disposal needs of our own citizens.”

“We have been working very closely with Stewart County Mayor Rick Joiner and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) representatives to find a resolution,” said Mayor Durrett.

Stewart County Mayor Rick Joiner adds, “We know the needs of the citizens of Stewart and Montgomery County are the top priority of our landfill and we are proactively taking steps to resolve this issue and move forward. We have the land available for the needed expansion and will work closely with the Bi-County SWM board and TDEC to rectify any issues and proceed with the permitting process.”

“Our staff will continue to work with Bi-County Solid Waste Management to help it expand capacity,” said Patrick Flood, director of Solid Waste Management for the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. “In the meantime, we will make every effort to create a smooth process for the citizens affected by this transition.”

Bi-County SWM is a solid waste authority formed in 1974 between Montgomery and Stewart Counties. This Class I Landfill is governed by a seven member board, consisting of members from both counties. For more information on Bi-County SWM, visit www.mcgtn.org/bi-county
