APSU Men's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Dave Loos, Austin Peay State University’s longtime basketball coach, recently underwent surgery to successfully remove a malignant tumor.

“Our thoughts and concerns right now are for the health and well-being of Coach Loos,” APSU Athletics Director Ryan Ivey said. “We look forward to welcoming him back when he has made a full recovery.”

A recent medical exam led to the discovery of a malignant tumor on Loos’ colon. The tumor was successfully removed at St. Thomas Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, but had spread to one out of 23 lymph nodes in the area. While he will require chemotherapy treatments, Loos is expected to make a full recovery and be back on the Austin Peay sideline for his 27th season as Governors head coach.

Assistant coach Jay Bowen will lead the program on a day-to-day basis in the interim while Loos will be as involved as possible until he returns full time. Bowen returned to the APSU men’s basketball coaching staff last summer for a second stint at Austin Peay and third under Loos—the two also coached together at Christian Brothers back in the mid-1980s.

“I am confident in the ability of our assistant coaches, led by Jay Bowen, to continue the growth of our men’s basketball program, while we await Coach Loos’ return,” said Ivey.
