Montgomery County Health Department along with Local Public Health Officials to Conduct CASPER Survey

Montgomery County Government TennesseeMontgomery County, TN – The Tennessee Department of Health, in conjunction with officials from the Montgomery County Health Department, will conduct a Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response, also called a CASPER, in our area July 26th and 27th.

This CASPER is done by going door-to-door and speaking directly with community members about information on the Zika virus and ways to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.

Public Health Director Joey Smith notes, “This full scale exercise is two-fold; it gives us real life experience in conducting a CASPER should the need arise and it gives us a chance to educate our community on the Zika virus. This CASPER method is what would be used to rapidly assess a community’s health needs in a time of disaster, so it’s always good to practice.”

Thirty-nine areas of Clarksville and Montgomery County have been identified for this exercise. All officials will be easily identifiable and all surveys are voluntary.

If your area is chosen, teams will work door-to-door asking quick survey questions in an effort to obtain a statistically significant response. Survey responses will be collected and help in the planning should a disaster ever happen in our area.

Smith continues, “There are no right or wrong answers to the survey questions, but it is important the public helps us with answering our questions. We need their help to be prepared should we have a large scale emergency here. This is the best way for us to practice and will help us identify any gaps in response before it’s a true emergency.”
