APSU Football - Austin Peay State UniversityTroy, AL – Austin Peay State University football will usher in the Will Healy era when the Governors take the field in a game on the road at FBS level and Sun Belt Conference member Troy, 5:00pm, Saturday, at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The two teams have met 16 times with Troy holding a narrow lead in the all-time series, 8-7-1. The series picks up after a 14-yard hiatus when the Trojans topped the Govs 41-3, October 5th, 2002.  Prior to that meeting, the two squads had not played each other since the 1972 season, a 27-0 win for Troy.

The Healy era will officially begin Saturday with the opening kickoff; however, the Govs have been gaining ground and making headlines throughout the offseason. Healy took the reigns last December and promptly assembled his coaching staff to hit the recruiting trail.

APSU Kendall MorrisTheir efforts landed the Govs with a top five recruiting class when the dust settled on National Signing Day, with eight members from that recruiting class landing on the Govs two-deep heading into Troy. All told, of the 103 Govs on the roster, 43 are new to APSU.

Healy and Co. return Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer team member Kendall Morris in the backfield.  The front five has plenty of experience returning, while wide out Jared Beard, who quietly put together a solid campaign in 2015, returns on the edge.

APSU Roderick OwensOn the defensive side, Roderick Owens returns at the defensive back positon along with Gunnar Scholato at middle linebacker anchoring the Govs’ defense.

Austin Peay will open their 2016 home slate and Ohio Valley Conference action Saturday, September 10 when Tennessee Tech comes to Clarksville Tennessee and Fortera Stadium.
