Bowling Green, KY – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team saw its undefeated streak come to an end, Sunday, falling to Western Kentucky 2-1 in overtime.
During regulation with the Govs trailing 1-0, Austin Peay (3-1-0) equalized with a wonder strike by freshman Renee Semaan in the 87th minute.
A couple deflections followed before Semaan controlled it and fired a one-timer into the back of the net from about 30 yards out.
Once 90 minutes weren’t enough to decide a victor, the Governors entered overtime for the first time in 2016.
However, the first overtime period would be short-lived. Fourteen seconds in, the Hilltoppers (2-2-0) scored the game-winner, a strike by Bria Mosley which sailed in.
In the first half, APSU could not find its rhythm in the midfield, leading to chances for the Hilltoppers. Western Kentucky held an 8-3 shot advantage in the half, forcing freshman goalkeeper Mary Parker Powell to make four early saves. Powell played the full match, making six total saves.
Western Kentucky also held an edge in winning corners with six compared to APSU’s one. In the 72nd minute, the Hilltoppers scored the game’s first goal as Chandler Backes found space at the top corner of the box and fired it one-time.
Semaan and senior Gina Fabbro led the Govs in shots with three each, while freshman Jennifer Smith totaled two. Both of Smith’s shots came off a corner kick, one of which was a header that deflected off the crossbar in the 88th minute.
