Nina Covington’s Explorations on View at the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center

Clarksville's Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterClarksville, TN – Through October 2nd, the Customs House Museum and Cultural Center is showcasing the mixed media works of Nina Covington. Free spirited horses pose alongside like-minded women in the saturated hues of Nina’s compositions.

The rich tones of red and gold emphasize the techniques of long exposure filming used by the artist in such pieces as Radiate where the carnival-dressed model seems to be stretching toward the boundary of the canvas.

Each piece in this exhibit is presented in mixed media form.

She has painted over her canvases with a series of different mediums to enhance color, light, shadow, and texture.

Nina Covington started her artistic career as a model. Working with noted photographers, such as Jack Spencer, Adrian David Payne, and Thomas Dodd, made her curious to learn the other side of a camera. Nina says she has always known that it was her job to tell stories.

While working as a model, she tells those stories in front of the camera. A pivotal moment came when Nina realized she can only tell half of the story as a model; the other half is always told by the photographer. Nina began wanting more control, so she began taking self-portraits which eventually led her to photograph other people.

Her images are stripped down, honest and dark. From her fine art equestrian photography to her long exposures, she plays in the shadows. Nina’s work is cohesive, as each detail in the execution of her photographs adds to the story she’s telling. She has exhibited at Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts in Los Angeles, Modern East Gallery, and the Corvidae Collective, both in Nashville, Tennessee.
