APSU Women’s Tennis plays strong at Evansville Metro Collegiate Invitational

APSU Women's Tennis - Austin Peay State UniversityEvansville, OH – The Austin Peay State women’s tennis team hit the midway point of their fall season with a strong showing at the Evansville Metro Collegiate Invitational over the weekend.

In the No. 1 singles draw, Lidia Yanes Garcia advanced to the finals after defeating Lauren Hambrock of Southern Indiana, 6-1, 6-2, and Elpide Malamou of Western Kentucky, 6-2, 6-1. Yanes Garcia fell in the finals 6-3, 6-7(5), 11-9, to UT Martin’s Sarah Candeloro.

In the No. 2 singles draw, Claudia Yanes Garcia dropped her opening match 6-2, 6-4, to Adreanna Christopoulou from Western Kentucky, but rebounded with a pair of wins to win the consolation bracket. Yanes Garcia defeated Laura Von Eekhoudt from Belmont, 8-0, in the consolation semifinals before topping Claudia Arroyo from UNA, 6-0, 6-3, in the consolation final.

In the No. 6B singles draw, Isabela Jovanovic roared through the bracket with three consecutive straight set wins to win the bracket.  Jovanovic opened play with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Nadia Sable from Bellarmine before beating Jenny Mizikar from Southern Indiana 6-2, 6-0.  She sealed the bracket win with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Alex Thompson from USI.

The Govs will be back in action this weekend at USC Upstate.
