APSU Softball - Austin Peay State UniversityNashville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team lost its first games of the fall season, Saturday at the Trojan Softball Complex, as the Governors fell to Trevecca Nazarene  University by finals of 13-7 and 7-6.

The Govs (3-2-1) only led once in Game 1, with that coming on a first-inning home run by Kacy Acree, in Game 1, but Trevecca answered with two run in the bottom of the inning to take the lead, 2-1.

Austin Peay would tie the game 2-2 on a solo home run in the top of the third inning by Danielle Liermann, but again the Trojans answered back in their half of the inning with Mary Collins hitting a three-run homer to give Trevecca the lead for good, 5-2.

The Trojans would extend their lead out to seven runs, 9-2, with four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but Austin Peay wouldn’t go quietly.

Carly Mattson, who led the Govs with three hits, opened the top of the sixth inning with a single, followed by a single from Tess Robinson.

After a passed ball moved both runners into scoring position, Drew Dudley scored Mattson with a sacrifice fly.

Haley Marschall then singled through the right side of the Trevecca infield too bring in Robinson to make it 9-4.

Erica Inagaki kept the rally going with a double to right-center, with pinch runner Emily Moore coming around to score when the throw from Trevecca’s center fielder got away from their cutoff.

Inagaki, Acree and Robinson all finished with two hits in the loss.

The final run of the inning came two batters later, with Rikki Arkansas driving in Inagaki with a single up the middle to cut the deficit to just two runs, 9-7.

But like the first two times the Govs put runs of the board, the Trojans answered right back in the bottom of the inning, this time scoring four runs for the 13-7 final margin.

In Game 2 like the opening game of the day, the Govs got out to a 1-0 in the first inning, with Liermann driving in Arkansas with a single.

But that would be the only run the Govs would score over the first four innings, with Trevecca tying the game with a single run in the second and take the lead for good with three more runs in the fourth.

Austin Peay would cut the Trevecca lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning on an RBI double by Kelsey Gross, scoring Kendall Vedder, who had opened the inning with a single.

Again, Trevecca answered right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs to go up five, 7-2.

Austin Peay would once more try to rally, scoring three runs in the sixth inning – including RBI singles by Victoria Eccleston and Chandler Groves – and fourth run in the seventh on a single by Acree to make it a one-run game, but that would be as close as they would get in a one-run loss.

Christiana Gable led the Govs in the nightcap with three hits, with Acree adding two hits.

The Govs conclude their fall schedule Sunday, October 9th, with a home doubleheader at Cheryl Holt Field starting at 3:00pm.
