Morgan Kauffman leads APSU Golf at Winthrop Intercollegiate

Rock Hill, SC – After scuffling two weeks ago in her final home tournament, senior Morgan Kauffman bounced back in a big way to lead Austin Peay State University women’s golf team to a fourth-place standing after round one at the Winthrop Intercollegiate, Saturday, at Rock Hill Country Club.

The 76 was her best first-round performance this season and one shot behind her season-low 75 in the second round of the Cardinal Classic, September 19th.

She’s three shots behind tournament leader Chelsea Dantonio of Winthrop with 18 holes to go.

“I’m proud of how Kauffman played,” said head coach Sara Robson. “She played steady golf and made some clutch putts.”

Freshman Meghann Stamps also found her way into the top-10 after round one, firing a 78. In her last two tournaments, she’s averaged a 76.5 for her first 18 holes of play. She’ll shoot to make it back-to-back top-10 finishes tomorrow.

The Goodley sisters battled the elements with the rest of the field Saturday, with Taylor and Ashton Goodley firing matching 82s to sit tied for 20th, along with APSU’s individual player Amber Bosworth. AnnaMichelle Moore‘s first-round 87 rounded out the lineup for Austin Peay.

Overall, Austin Peay’s 318 trails host Winthrop (304), Appalachian State (316) and Presbyterian (317) heading into the final round, with Radford (319) rounding out the top-five.

“Conditions were tough,” Robson said. “We handled the wind well but around the greens and putting really hurt us. We executed our plans well today, we just had some plans that needed to be different around the greens.”

The final-round shotgun start begins 8:30am (CT), Sunday; the Govs will be paired with Radford and Bethune-Cookman.
