Clarksville Police make public aware of Robbery, Theft, and Aggravated Assault Incidents from Online Buying and Selling Scams

Clarksville Police Department - CPDClarksville, TN – Currently, the Clarksville Police Department’s District 1 and 3 CI Units are both investigating three different incidents that recently occurred involving buying iPhones online on Craigslist and by using the letgo app.

The sellers-suspects tell the victims that they are selling iPhones (that don’t work properly) and then attempt to get away with the victims’ cash without losing any items of value.

Scam Alert

The suspects then change their online identifications and profiles immediately.

CPD wants to ensure that the public is aware of these schemes and that individuals involved in online transactions are taking all precautionary measures to prevent a potentially harmful situation.

The following are the narratives of the three incidents being investigated:

Incident 1: Robbery

On October 19th, 2016 at 5:38pm, the victim told CPD Officers he was attempting to buy an iPhone 6s that he had found on Craigslist. When he met with the two suspects at Independence Place Apartments at 3193 Fort Campbell Boulevard, he noticed the phone was not in good condition and requested to place his SIM card into the phone to make sure it worked.

While testing the SIM card, one suspect approached him with his hand behind his back, attempting to make the victim believe he had a weapon. The same suspect then used his other hand, reached into the victim’s shirt pocket, took two checks and cash, pushed the victim back in the same motion, and ran off with the other suspect.

The suspects left going between the 1100 building and a privacy fence going north. The victim followed the suspects a short distance then called 911. Detective Andy Hurst from District 1 CI took over this ongoing investigation.

Incident 2: Theft

On October 22nd, 2016 at 7:25pm, the victim told CPD Officers he was attempting to buy an iPhone 6 Plus that he had found on the letgo app. The victim met the seller in the parking lot at Independence Place Apartments at 3193 Fort Campbell Boulevard.

As the victim was counting out the money, the seller-suspect said the victim’s cash was counterfeit and grabbed the money, ran and got into an older white Mustang, and drove off towards Kentucky. The seller-suspect did have the iPhone but never gave it to the victim and left with the victim’s cash.

The suspect was a tall black male with short black dreads and had a beige jacket and a tattoo on his left forearm. The driver of the white Mustang was a white male with a black shirt. Their names are unknown. Detective Andy Hurst from District 1 CI took over this ongoing investigation.

Incident 3: Aggravated Assault

On October 22nd, 2016 at 1:47pm, the victim told CPD Officers he was attempting to buy an iPhone 6s that he had found on Craigslist. The victim met the seller at the Mapco at 2099 Wilma Rudolph Boulevard.

The victim advised the seller-suspect that the phone didn’t work, he did not want to buy it and handed the phone back the seller-suspect. The suspect pointed a black pistol at him and said that he was going to kill him and the victim left the scene in his car. The seller-suspect was a black male accompanied by a white female.

The phone they were trying to sell was a rose gold iPhone 6s with a chip in the top left corner. Detective Channing Bartel from District 3 CI took over this ongoing investigation.
