APSU Governors play Tennessee State at home on Military Appreciation Day

APSU Football - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – The Austin Peay State football team heads back to Fortera Stadium for the first game in a two-game home stand to close out Ohio Valley Conference play in 2016 with kickoff against Tennessee State slated for 4:00pm Saturday.

Austin Peay is 0-8 overall and 0-6 in the OVC after a 41-21 loss on the road at Southeast Missouri in their last game.

TSU heads into the meeting at 5-3 overall and a 2-2 record in the OVC after falling to Murray State 38-31 in their last game.  The Tigers are receiving votes in both the FCS Coaches’ Poll and the STATS FCS Top 25 Poll.

Saturday’s contest is Military Appreciation Day.

The Govs defense held Mercer to 0-of-12 on third down. Over the last three games, APSU has held opponents to 5-of-34 on 3rd down.

APSU racked up 500 yards of total offense (186 rushing, 314 passing) against Mercer. It’s the first 500-yard game since the 2006 season when the Govs were in the Pioneer Football League.

APSU Football - Kentel WilliamsTwo APSU freshman saw their significant action against Mercer and SEMO. Quarterback JaVaughn Craig is the leading OVC rusher over the last two weeks averaging 105 yards per game after 84 yards on the ground against Mercer and 126 yards at SEMO.

Running back Kentel Williams is the league’s 7th leading rusher over the same time frame averaging 71 yards per game in just his second game as the feature back.

Kyran Moore was honored as the Ohio Valley Specialist of the Week after his 98-yard kickoff return against EIU. Moore was the first Gov to earn weekly league recognition since 2012 and the first APSU specialist since 2011.

APSU Jared BeardWide receiver Jared Beard leads the OVC in the receptions per game, 7.2, yards per game, 94.0, and total receiving yards 752.

Beard hauled in 11 catches for 181 yards against Mercer. He’s had over 100 receiving yards in three games and caught double-digit passes in two games in 2016.

Beard has caught 125 passes for 1,503 yards and 14 TDs in his career. He ranks seventh in receiving yards, seventh in receptions and fifth in touchdown receptions in the APSU record books.

Linebacker Gunnar Scholato leads the NCAA and leads the OVC in tackles per game at 13.0. Scholato recorded 18 tackles against SEMO marking the 6th best tackle performance on the season in the NCAA.

Through eight games Scholato has amassed 104 tackles. His 13.0 tackles per game average over the next four games would vault him into the APSU records for tackles in the single season. The current record is 207 set by Bobby Byrd in 1963.
