Clarksville, TN | Dunn Center
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team will bring the exhibition season to a close when it hosts Sewanee, 7:00pm, Friday in the Dunn Center.
The Govs raced out to a 37-7 lead within the first 12 minutes of Tuesday’s exhibition opener against Thomas More and never looked back, cruising to a 112-63 win against the Saints.Josh Robinson‘s 22 points led the way for Austin Peay.
Sophomore Zach Glotta had the hot hand early against the Saints, hitting all five of his first half shots, including four three-pointers; he finished with 17 points.
Scouting the Tigers
Under first-year head coach Bradley Pierson, Sewanee looks to ride the hot hand of two-time All-SAA selection Jorden Williams—a 1,000-point scorer—and Brody Stone, who averaged 8.7 points and 7.0 boards a year ago. The 20 wins Sewanee posted a year ago was the program’s most since the 1997-98 season.
Last Time Out Against Sewanee
Six Govs scored in double figures in a 91-64 victory at the Dunn Center, November 5th, 2015, led by Chris Horton‘s 24 points. Josh Robinson (16 points), John Murry (11) and Kenny Jones (10) were among the high-scoring Govs who will be featured in this season’s matchup, while Williams had 20 for Sewanee.
Austin Peay shot 55.2 percent from the floor but saw Sewanee hit 14 three-pointers in the contest—the Governors perimeter defense harassed Thomas More into an abysmal 4-for-31 performance from beyond the arc Tuesday night.
Keep An Eye On
- Robinson’s House
Josh Robinson, firmly entrenched as point guard, will steer the ship in 2016-17 for the Govs; Austin Peay’s scoring average with Robinson at the point over the final seven games was 84.0 ppg, far outstripping its rate before he took command (74.2 ppg). - Horton Gone
Unfortunately, there’s no manual for how to replace a legend who averaged 18.8 points and 12.0 rebounds last season, so Austin Peay will have to get by without the departed Horton, who was drafted by Grand Rapids of the NBA Development League, Sunday. Senior Kenny Jones (7.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg) will be heavily relied upon, as will a cavalcade of faces old (Assane Diop, Chris Porter-Bunton) and new (Dre’Kalo Clayton). - Firing Range
The Govs will have the green light in 2016-17; five returners attempted at least 25 three-pointers last season and Clayton was a 39-percent shooter from deep at Northwest Mississippi Junior College. The Govs nailed 13 three-pointers in the exhibition opener, highlighted by Glotta, who hit four from deep, with Robinson and Clayton hitting three apiece. - Boarding Blues
The Governors were outrebounded by Thomas More 39-37 in the exhibition opener, although those numbers are a bit misleading—no Thomas More player collected more than five rebounds, while the Saints enjoyed the benefit of the friendly bounce to get seven team rebounds, compared to Austin Peay’s three. Jones and Savage led the Govs on the boards with seven apiece.
