Fort Campbell’s Blanchfield Army Community Hospital has Nurse Positions opening

BACH nurse shares career path, urges others to join team

Blanchfield Army Hospital - BACH - Fort Campbell KYFort Campbell, KY – A civilian licensed practical nurse at Blanchfield Army Community Hospital (BACH) loves her job and urges other nurses to consider a career at BACH, as nearly two dozen nurse positions open soon.

A military family member for years, Candace Martin had been around military treatment facilities most of her life. Her father had served in the Army for 20 years, so she was familiar with military treatment facilities as a patient, having received care since childhood.

However, when she began working at BACH a little more than two years ago, it opened her eyes to an entirely new perspective and a bevy of rewards.

“I was nervous at first because I did not know what to expect now that I was going to be working on a military base,” Martin said, reflecting on her first thoughts about working at Fort Campbell.

She said she learned about multiple openings for licensed practical nurses at BACH from a former employee at the hospital, and she knew then it seemed a perfect match for her. Martin had been working at an outpatient clinic at a civilian hospital, but was eager to put her nursing school skills to use in an inpatient setting. Moving from outpatient to inpatient was just the motivation she needed to apply.

“I wanted to gain experience in an inpatient setting and so I searched www.USAjobs.gov to determine if they had any openings,” Martin said. “Our scope of practice in a civilian setting is very limited and I worked mainly as a technician or clerk. I now enjoy the opportunity to be part of such happy moments for the service members and their families.”

Martin’s first LPN role at Blanchfield was on the Labor and Delivery unit where she assisted with caesarian births and care of newborns. “This is still my favorite part of my job.”

At BACH, Martin continuously builds upon her trained skills. She helps take care of mothers during their postpartum care, triages or prioritizes patients care for treatment in the outpatient setting, and performs intravenous (IV) therapy and more.

Martin said she takes pride in knowing, although not in a military uniform, she carries on her father’s tradition – taking care of service members and their families who defend our country and freedoms.

“I feel proud and honored to be a part of some of the most memorable and happy moments of individuals and their families who make sacrifices to serve our country,” Martin said. “Working here (BACH) has made me feel like I am part of a team with the same mission of serving our military and their families.”

For other nurses considering employment at Blanchfield, Martin warns that the hiring process may seem long and confusing at times, but the end result is well worth the effort.

“I recommend for LPNs who desire to work at BACH to be patient with the hiring process, because they will be happy they made the choice.”

Blanchfield is currently hiring Full-Time LPN positions. In addition to getting to utilize the skills learned in nursing school, the benefits are impressive. Benefits include 10 paid holidays, annual and sick leave, Thrift Savings (401K), retirement, health and life insurance.

LPNs interested in applying, should apply at www.usajobs.gov or contact BACH’s Human Resource Division at 270.798.8009 for specific questions relating to the openings.
