Clarksville, TN – On Saturday, November 12th, the Austin Peay State football team will close out Ohio Valley Conference play and their 2016 home season with Eastern Kentucky at 4:00pm in Fortera Stadium.
Austin Peay is 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the OVC after a 41-40 heartbreaking loss to Tennessee State in the closing seconds of the contest.
Saturday’s contest is Senior Day for the APSU. Twelve Govs will be recognized for their commitment to Austin Peay football prior to kickoff.
Over the last four weeks, the Govs have held opponent to a measly 20.9 percent third down conversion rate. That mark is the second best mark in the OVC during the time frame.
APSU racked up 500 yards of total offense (186 rushing, 314 passing) against Mercer, and followed up with a school record 644 (322 rushing, 322 passing) yards of offense against TSU.
Freshman quarterback JaVaughn Craig was named the OVC Co-Offensive and Newcomer Player of the Week after accounting for 446 yards of total offense (322 passing, 144 rushing). He also tied a school record and set a freshman record with five touchdown passes. Craig was the second Gov to earn OVC weekly honors after Kyran Moore was named specialist of the week after the EIU game.
After pulling the redshirt off of Craig three weeks ago, the Govs have averaged an OVC leading 513.7 yards per game and average 31.7 points per game – the second best mark in the league.
During the same frame, Craig has led the lead in rushing (118 yards per game) and passing efficiency (187.2). After making the switch from wide out to running back three weeks ago, freshman Kentel Williams averages 77 yards per game. He also has a four touchdown game under his belt.
Wide receiver Jared Beard leads the OVC in the receptions per game, 7.3, yards per game, 94.0, and total receiving yards 898.
Beard hauled in 11 catches for 181 yards against Mercer before tallying eight catches for 146 yards and three TDs two games later against TSU. He’s had over 100 receiving yards in four games. It was his second three-TD game in his Gov career.
Linebacker Gunnar Scholato is second in the NCAA and leads the OVC in tackles per game at 12.3. Scholato recorded 18 tackles against SEMO marking the 6th best tackle performance on the season in the NCAA.
