Clarksville, TN – Behind a career-best 23 points from junior center Brianne Alexander, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team picked up its first win of 2016 with a 76-57 victory over Christian Brothers, Sunday, in the Dunn Center.
Austin Peay outscored the Lady Bucs 27-13 in the third period, establishing a lead at the 3:49 mark before closing the quarter on a 12-3 run.
Defensively, the Govs improved throughout the game. After allowing Christian Brothers to shoot 69 percent in the opening period, APSU held CBU to 6-of-25 shooting in the second half.
Austin Peay had four players finish in double figures in an overall balanced scoring contest. Along with Alexander, senior center Tearra Banks recorded 15 points, while senior forward Beth Rates and redshirt sophomore guard Falon Baker each had 10.
Game Notes
- The 27 points are the most scored by Austin Peay in a quarter since February 20th, 2016 against Murray State.
- The Governors went to the free throw line 17 times in the third period, with Alexander having eight of those attempts. She finished the day 11-of-16 from the charity stripe, along with five rebounds.
- Banks did her damage in the first half, with 13 of her 15 points occurring in the first two periods. She also grabbed five rebounds in the contest.
- Despite an off shooting night (1-of-5 from three), Baker helped the Govs in other ways aside from her 10 points. The guard secured eight rebounds, one off her career-high, and also recorded two assists and two steals.
- Rates stuffed the stat sheet, leading the Govs in blocks (two), steals (three) and free throw percentage (1.000, 4-of-4).
- Junior point guard Bri Williams dished out seven assists, and also scored four points with five rebounds.
- Freshman guard Nieja Crawford has a solid game off the bench, contributing seven points, five rebounds and two assists.
- Speaking of the bench, Austin Peay received 31 points from its reserves.
- All 14 players on Austin Peay’s roster entered the game as Midlick mixed and matched with his rotations in the first half.
Midlick’s Message
“We were struggling to find a rotation. I think when those five that played a lot in the second half went in, we were down five but outscored Christian Brothers by 19 points in the last four or five minutes of the third period. Bri is a player that when she is aggressive, you have to honor her 15-foot shot. She can also get past you on the drive and is pretty good with her back to the basket. I was glad to see her come out of shell today have success. She deserves it.”
