APSU Men's Golf - Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf head coach Robbie Wilson has announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent to join the Governors next fall.

Chase Korte, Jay Fox and Garrett Whitfield will become the latest additions to Wilson’s squad, which sees only Erik Hedberg off to graduation at the end of this year.

Korte’s name is a familiar one to longtime Austin Peay golf fans—his brother Dustin played for the Govs from 2009-13 and represented Austin Peay at the 2013 NCAA Championships in Georgia.

Chase has made his name at McCracken County (KY.) High School, earning 2016 First-Team All-State honors with a 70.35 season average, including a low of 63. He missed the top-10 in just two of 16 tournaments.

“The thing that stands out to me about Chase is his athleticism,” Wilson said. “He has all the physical tools to be a great player in this game. It was exciting for me to watch him develop over the last year and become one of the better players in Kentucky. Much like Garrett and Jay, Chase wants to win every time he tees it up and that competitiveness makes our team better from day one that he is on campus. The Korte family has APSU roots and I can’t wait to see what Chase will do wearing the red and white!”

Whitfield hails from Johnson City Tennessee and is a three-time state championship qualifier, topping out with a tie for third in the 2016 TSSAA championships and helping coach Kevin Vennoy’s Science Hill squad earn back-to-back team runner-up honors at the state championship. Whitfield was a conference champion and earned all-state, all-conference and all-region honors in 2016. He ranks 11th in the state of Tennessee by the National Junior Golf Scoreboard (NJGS) and 162nd nationally.

“Over the past few years, Garrett has developed into one of the better players in Tennessee,” Wilson said. “When he came on campus for a visit, I could tell he was someone that would fit into our program well. He is a tremendous competitor and will come in right away and push the upperclassmen. One of the things I like most about Garrett is his consistency and the touch that he shows around the greens.”

A Springfield, Tennessee, native, Fox was Class A/AA Region 4 champion in 2016 and earned runner-up honors at the state level for Goodpasture Christian School. A member of the 2016 Tennessee Junior Cup West Team, Fox won the 2015 Craig Goodman Rudolph Memorial and also earned the Goodman Award, given to the golfer who displays outstanding sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct throughout the tournament, at the same event. Fox came in at No. 26 in the most recent NJGS rankings.

“Jay is a winner,” Wilson said. “The last few years recruiting, it has been important for me to recruit players that are comfortable at the top, or near the top of the leaderboard. Jay has shown that he is willing to compete and has experience with coming through in the big moments. Jay is very steady both on and off the course and his demeanor and passion for the game will take him a long way.”
