Austin Peay roared out of the gate and owned a 20-point advantage before the eight-minute media timeout in the first half, highlighted by a 17-4 run from 13:02 to 8:20.

Sophomore Zach Glotta hit a pair of threes during the sequence, with sophomore Steve Harris punctuating the run with an emphatic dunk.

The Governors led 65-38 at the half, the first 60-point half posted by Austin Peay since Dec. 30, 2015 against Westminster. The Govs shot a scintillating 63.9 percent (23-for-36) in the first half.

There wasn’t much drop-off to the numbers in the second half. In fact, from the opening whistle to the 7:01 mark in the half, Austin Peay outscored the Mighty Oaks 36-10; senior guard John Murry scored all of his career-high 15 points during this sequence.

Of the seven Govs in double figures, four were career-highs: Murry, Glotta (15 points), senior Assane Diop (12) and junior Dre’Kalo Clayton. Harris also posted a career-high with nine points. Junior Josh Robinson led all scorers with 17 points, while sophomore Jared Savage and senior Kenny Jones (10 apiece) also found their way into double figures.

Harris and Chris Porter-Bunton were each a point away from scoring in double digits. It was the first time seven Governors were in double figures in the same game since the aforementioned Westminster game last season.

The Difference

The Governors forced 27 turnovers, resulting in 34 points. Robinson had a career-high six steals, while Harris had four.

Notably

  • The Governors 17 steals were a Dunn Center record, surpassing the Nov. 17, 2007 mark against Belmont by one.
  • Robinson is the first Gov with five or more steals since Zavion Williams (Nov. 27, 2014 against Brown). His seven assists also were a career-high.
  • Murry, Diop and Clayton comprised the first trio of Austin Peay players to score in double figures off the bench since Murry, Savage and Porter-Bunton against Westminster in 2015.
  • Murry’s 7-for-8 shooting night was a career-best and the best by a Gov (minimum seven attempts) since Chris Horton‘s record-breaking 16-for-17 performance at Lipscomb, Dec. 20, 2015.
  • The 27 turnovers forced were the most by Austin Peay since the Governors forced 30 at Southeast Missouri, Jan. 29, 2008.

Coaching Quotables

“We started Zach tonight because he’s got the hot hand right now. He played pretty well against Dayton, especially in the second half, so we wanted to get him out there and build some confidence. He’s shooting well, he’s defending well… I like the way he’s playing right now.” – Head coach Dave Loos on Glotta.

Up Next for the APSU Govs

Three games in Oxford, Ohio, are on tap for Austin Peay at the Tarkett Sports Classic, hosted by Miami University. The Govs will play the host Redhawks, Saturday, sandwiched between Northern Kentucky and Delaware.
