Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team put up a strong defensive performance in Wednesday’s home contest in the Dunn Center, leading to a 62-55 victory over Arkansas State.
The Governors (2-1) shined in the defensive stat categories, totaling 10 blocks and four steals while also forcing 13 turnovers and holding the Red Wolves (0-2) to 29 percent from the field.Austin Peay never led by more than four until the 8:07 mark of the fourth period as the Govs went on to outscore ASU 20-12 in the final stanza.
On a balanced scoring night, nine different Governors recorded points, led by junior Bri Williams and redshirt sophomore Falon Baker who had 11 points apiece.
Game Notes
- Along with her career-high 11 points, Williams played 32 minutes at the point, also adding six rebounds, two assists and went 7-of-10 at the free throw line. All of her trips to the charity stripe occurred in the fourth period as the juniors helped seal the win for the Govs.
- Nine of Baker’s 11 points came in the opening period, and she also grabbed three rebounds overall.
- Senior center Tearra Banks recorded 10 points and eight rebounds.
- Junior forward Beth Rates had another solid multi-category game, finishing with five points, five rebounds and four blocks. She is now six blocks away from tying Sonja Cox for fifth all-time.
- Freshman guard Nieja Crawford showed impressive defense off the bench late in the game, and also scored five points and hauled in six boards.
- Austin Peay outrebounded Arkansas State 44-36, helped on by moving Sydney Gooch onto the floor to join Rates and Banks against the lengthy Red Wolves squad.
