Austin Peay State University Women’s Basketball falls by one point to St. Bonaventure

APSU Women's Basketball - Austin Peay State UniversityOrlando, FL – Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team came one point short of completing a second-half comeback against St. Bonaventure, Saturday, falling 58-57 in the opening game of the UCF Thanksgiving Classic in the CFE Arena.

For the Governors (4-2), the loss snaps its four-game winning streak.

In the opening period, the Govs got behind the eight ball early, with St. Bonaventure (2-3) outscoring APSU 22-7.

The Bonnies shot 62.5 percent from the field compared to APSU’s 23 percent clip. However, Austin Peay answered with a strong second frame, upping the aggression to force five steals and limit SBU’s chances.

Austin Peay outmatched St. Bonaventure 34-28 in the second half, but the early hole was too much to overcome. Junior forward Sydney Gooch and junior guard Bri Williams each had 11 points to lead the Govs, combining for six three-pointers on the afternoon. Freshman guard Shelbe Piggie scored a career-best 11 points off the bench, including a three at the final buzzer.

Game Notes

The three triples on four attempts are both career-highs for Gooch. The junior also finished with a team-high two blocks.

Williams provided APSU’s offense in the first half, recording seven early points. She set career-highs in points (13) and threes (three), while also dishing out four assists.

Piggie was 4-of-6 from the field in her 13 minutes, including three successful attempts behind the arch.

The Govs were outscored 30-10 in the paint, with senior center Tearra Banks held to just two points with eight rebounds. In addition, senior forward Beth Rates had seven points and five boards.

APSU won the turnover battle, with 13 compared to SBU’s 16, but was at a disadvantage in rebounding, 39-33.

Saturday was the first meeting between the Governors and Bonnies.
