Austin Peay (18-19, 9-11 OVC) could not solve Morehead State starter Dalton Stambaugh through the first four innings. The Eagles pitcher retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced, only permitting a leadoff walk in the third inning.

Morehead State (27-12, 12-5 OVC) used the start by their lefty to race out to a 7-0 lead through those four frames. The Eagles took advantage of base hits to start the second, third and fourth frames to build their advantage. Third baseman Eli Boggess led off the second with a triple and would score on a ground out for the game’s first lead.

The Eagles saw the first three batters of the third inning reach safely and ultimately score, including left fielder Nico Hulsizer’s leadoff home run. In the fourth, Morehead State saw the first four batters reach safely and three of them eventually scored, including a run on Hulsizer’s single, as they built the 7-0 advantage.

Austin Peay would break through in the fifth, using a leadoff single by first baseman Dre Gleason to spark the rally. Shortstop Kyle Wilson, center fielder Imani Willis and second baseman Garrett Giovannelli each had two-out singles, the latter two driving in runs.

However, the Eagles would match that burst with two runs of their own in the sixth. The Govs would score again in their half of the sixth only to see Morehead State top that run with a pair of their own in the seventh before they tacked on a final run in the eighth.

Govs starter Brett Newberg (2-1) suffered his season’s first loss after allowing five runs on six this in three-plus innings of work.

Gleason would finish the game 2-for-4 with singles in the fifth and sixth innings. Giovannelli, Willis and catcher Alex Sala each had a RBI.

Stambaugh (3-1) would surrender the two runs in the fifth inning to end his outing. He held the Govs to four hits while striking out four over his five innings. Reliever Jake Ziegelmeyer notched his season’s second save by limiting the Govs to one run over the final four innings.

Hulsizer finished the game going 3-for-6 at the plate with two RBI, a double and a home run. Right fielder Will Schneider went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.

The Governors and Eagles, who split Friday’s doubleheader, are scheduled to complete the three-game OVC set with a 1:00pm, Saturday contest if weather permits.
