Work begins on River Trail Red River Section of Clarksville Greenway

City of Clarksville uses state grants to continue Greenway

City of Clarksville - Clarksville, TNClarksville, TN – Construction has begun on a another downtown section of the Clarksville Greenway, which ultimately will create a 10-mile hiking-and-biking trail connection between the City’s core and Heritage Park in Northeast Clarksville.

The latest section is known as the River Trail Red River Section and extends north along the Red River from the RiverWalk in McGregor Park to the Highway 41A bridge at Providence Boulevard.

The main elements of the work are construction of a walking trail, landscaping with irrigation, security lighting and parking.

“This important section gets us closer to the goal of connecting North Clarksville and Downtown via a greenway,” Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan said. “We’ve had great success in winning grant support for this plan, and residents consistently tell us they appreciate the recreation and fitness opportunities offered by our trails system.”

Total project cost for River Trail Red River Section is $1,059,349, and most of that amount — $853,449 — is funded by a grant from the Tennessee Department of Transportation. After a formal bidding process, a $829,329 construction contract was awarded to B.R. Miller & Company LLC, of Clarksville. The project is expected to be completed by the end of September 2017.

Under the master design plan, this section will connect to the Red River Trail East Phase 1, for which the City has already received  a state grant. The City has also applied for a grant from the  state for construction of a pedestrian bridge to connect the Red River Trail East Phase 1 to the existing Greenway.

In all, the Clarksville RiverWalk and Clarksville Greenway projects have unfolded over a number of years to provide an alternative transportation route and outdoor recreation opportunities in the City of Clarksville.
