APSU Basketball travels to Oklahoma State Wednesday

Clarksville, TN – Another battle against a high-major foe awaits Austin Peay State University men’s basketball in Stillwater, Oklahoma as the Govs get set to battle Oklahoma State, 7:00pm, Wednesday, November 29th at historic Gallagher-Iba Arena.

It’s the continuation of a stout schedule for first-year head coach Matt Figger and his charges.

With four non-conference contests against four high major opponents from different contests—Vanderbilt (SEC), Virginia (ACC), Oklahoma State (Big 12) and Illinois (Big 10)—the Govs are unique among Division I schools.

Only the Govs, Houston Baptist, Long Beach State, South Dakota State, Texas Southern, UCLA, VCU, Wichita State, Wisconsin and Wofford are scheduled to play four foes from four different high-major conferences during the 2017-18 season.

With the Govs looking to score an upset, the defensive end will be imperative for Austin Peay. The Govs are hitting nearly 50 percent (48.8) from the floor through six contests in 2017-18, but have allowed opponents to hit 46.4 percent. The Cowboys are putting up 80.2 points per contest and have been among the nation’s best in ball-control, with a 1.52 assist-to-turnover ratio ranking 19^th nationally.

About the Oklahoma State Cowboys

Winners of 13 straight non-conference home contests–and holding all four opponents who have visited Gallagher-Iba this season under 40 percent from the floor–Oklahoma State has proven tough on visiting foes. Since 1989, the Cowboys are 208-7 in non-conference games at home and 789-222 at home overall. OSU has trailed for just 1:39 total in four home games this season.

Oklahoma State’s 31-of-33 (.939) free-throw performance against Houston Baptist, Sunday, was the 24th-best outing in NCAA history and second-best in OSU history.

Future APSU Hall of Famer Nick Stapleton had 20 points, but Maurice Baker nearly had a triple-double (29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists) and Austin Peay missed some crucial opportunities at the charity stripe (9-of-20, 45.0 percent) to drop the 2001 season-opener for Austin Peay.

Keep An Eye On

A win would be Austin Peay’s first-ever against Oklahoma State, first against a high-major opponent since 2011 (Tennessee) and first against a Big 12 foe since 2000 (Colorado).

Austin Peay’s reserves have been stellar of late, averaging 41.8 ppg over the last four games. At least two Governor reserves have scored in double figures in each of the last four games.

In Dayton Gumm (Freshman of the Week) and Averyl Ugba (Newcomer of the Week), the Governors took two of three weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference for the first time since the final week of the 2015-16 campaign.

Gumm is the first Austin Peay freshman since at least the turn of the century to score 20 or more points in two of his first six collegiate contests.

Over the last four games—all featuring at least 25 points off turnover created by the Govs—Austin Peay is averaging 31.5 ppg off turnover.
